Know How to Navigate Rip Currents

Rip currents are powerful and can pull swimmers away from shore quickly.

Stay Hydrated & Sun-Safe

Drink water regularly, especially if you're enjoying drinks in the sun. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+) every 2 hours. Wear hats, sunglasses, and UPF-rated clothing. Bring shade (like an umbrella or tent) to avoid heat exhaustion.

Safety Tips for Walking, Riding, & Driving Through Perdiod Key Paradise

PRESS TO WALK

Crosswalk
Awareness

Perdido Key Drive is equipped with twelve pedestrian crosswalks designed to keep foot traffic safe across this scenic and busy stretch of road. The first crosswalk appears just after you cross into Perdido Key over the Theo Baars Bridge heading west onto the Key, located at the roundabout where Johnson Beach Road intersects. This marks the starting point of a designated pedestrian path that continues west all the way to the Alabama state line near Flora-Bama.

Flashing Crosswalk Signals

Flashing crosswalk signals are a critical safety feature on Perdido Key Drive. When these lights are activated and the accompanying warning signs are lit, drivers are legally required to come to a complete stop. It is essential that motorists carefully scan the entire crosswalk area and confirm that no pedestrians are present before moving forward. These signals are in place to protect everyone using the road, and strict adherence helps prevent accidents in these high-traffic areas.

Pedestrian & Cyclist Safety Tips

For pedestrians and cyclists, staying safe begins with pressing the button to activate the flashing crosswalk lights before stepping off the curb. It's important to wait until all lanes of traffic have come to a full stop in both directions before crossing. Even when the lights are flashing, some drivers may not stop, so remain vigilant and make eye contact when possible. By being proactive and aware, you can help ensure a safe and pleasant experience along Perdido Key Drive.
