Participant Experiences
Kaila Parker, Class 25/26 | Reliance Mortgage
"What makes our community so great? It’s the people. During my time with Leadership Perdido Key, I discovered just how many individuals—through volunteerism and their daily work—make a meaningful impact on our lives, often without recognition. This program opened my eyes to how our community operates, who and what we rely on, and how I can get involved to help ensure our community continues to thrive. It’s easy to criticize from the outside, but participating in a program like this provides a valuable perspective and appreciation. I highly recommend this course to anyone in our community."
Amanda Long, Class 25/26 | Pointe South Rentals and Real Estate
The Perdido Key Leadership Program has proven to be one of the most meaningful professional and personal experiences I’ve had since moving to the area. The behind-the-scenes and hands-on opportunities provided great insight into the organizations and systems that are essential in our community. Our visits to community service partners, such as the Emergency Operations Center, the Landfill Recycling Center, and the Naval Aviation Museum, provided valuable insight into the level of collaboration required to develop a thriving community. Beyond gaining knowledge, I gained a deeper understanding, perspective, and a deeper sense of belonging.
The Perdido Key Leadership Program exceeded all of my expectations! I highly recommend it.

Kendall Loper, Class of 25/26
"Touring the recycling facility at the Beulah Landfill was truly eye-opening. Seeing the volume of materials processed each day gave me a new appreciation for the county’s commitment to responsible waste management and environmental stewardship. The team’s professionalism, efficiency, and positive attitude were evident throughout our visit. Shawn Stapp (Materials Recycling Facility Manager, ECUA) is an inspiring example of local leadership making a measurable difference.”
Lauren Brown, Class of 25/26 | Perdido Key Area Chamber of Commerce
"Leadership Perdido Key taught me not only a deeper understanding of the town and area we live in, but also how our community truly works. From learning how water is recycled and how the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office Crime Center operates, to touring the ECUA Materials Recycling Facility, the flight academy at NAS Pensacola, and the many nonprofit organizations supporting our community, each experience was insightful and impactful.
What I enjoyed most, however, was getting to know my classmates and the businesses and organizations they represent. Over the course of the program, I learned more about them personally and saw firsthand what makes each of them a leader, whether it’s a small business owner guiding their employees and customers, or individuals in large organizations making a difference through the work they do every day."
Halley Porter Class, of 24/25 | Pointe South Rentals & Real Estate
"Being part of the first-ever Leadership Perdido Key class has been an incredible experience, one that deepened my understanding of what it truly means to lead. Through this program, I’ve learned that leadership isn’t about titles or recognition; it’s about service, reliability, and showing up for others. One of the most impactful lessons I took away is that strong communities are built not just by individuals who lead, but by those who lead together. I’m so grateful to have been a part of this journey and to be walking into the future with a greater sense of purpose, connection, and commitment to the community I love."

Christina Sasser, Class of 24/25 | Southern Vacation Rentals
"Participating in the Leadership Perdido Key Program was one of the most meaningful professional and personal experiences I’ve had. The program offered a unique, behind-the-scenes look at the organizations and systems that quietly but powerfully shape our daily lives, from non-profits like Baptist Hospital, Jamie’s Mom’s House, to the Emergency Operations Center, the Sheriff’s Department, the Recycling Center, and the Naval Aviation Museum. Each session opened my eyes to just how much dedication and collaboration it takes to support our little slice of paradise.
Through this program, I didn’t just gain knowledge, I gained perspective. It helped me grow as a leader within my organization, strengthening my ability to lead with empathy, purpose, and connection. More importantly, it deepened my sense of responsibility and commitment to giving back to the community that I’m so proud to be a part of. I’m incredibly grateful for the experience and would recommend it to anyone looking to make a real impact in Perdido Key and beyond."

"The Perdido Key Leadership opened my eyes regarding how operations, non-profits, local tourism, etc., work in and around Escambia County. The classes not only opened my eyes but also provided an exceptional amount of information from leaders around our local area. I would encourage anyone hesitant to just do it! You’ll thank yourself later!"
Katie Barker, Class 24/25 | Centre for Excellence

Being in the founding group was not only a privilege but also an invaluable experience that I will continue to glean from for years to come. The program was thoughtfully designed, with timely and informative content that brought a deeper understanding of how our community operates, from local government and business to service and tourism. More importantly, it emphasized the significance of my role as an engaged and informed community member.
